At Chattanooga Recovery Center, we walk alongside you as you work to overcome your addiction to live a sober life.

What Is Adventure-Based Counseling?

Adventure-based counseling (ABC) is an innovative approach to personal development that encourages people to expose themselves to perceived physical, emotional, and social risks in order to achieve personal growth and positive changes in behavior. This type of therapy was designed to help individuals, groups, and families overcome substance abuse problems as well as mental health concerns.

Led by local industry experts in recreation therapy, our adventure-based counseling sessions combine team-building exercises with exciting outdoor activities. After each activity, we will debrief to processes the experience in a group setting. This will help patients internalize the experience and use it to achieve their rehabilitation goals.

Some of our adventure-based counseling activities include:

  • Equine therapy
  • Hiking
  • Kayaking
  • Nature walks
  • Paddle boating
  • Paintball
  • Ropes courses
  • Ziplining

Why Adventure-Based Counseling?

Science has proven the incredible healing powers of nature again and again. Being outside offers benefits such as destressing the body and mind, improving short term memory, reducing blood pressure, and easing depression and anxiety. Plus, recovery should be a positive experience, and getting outside on going on new adventures is fun!

Adventure-based counseling works by:

  • Bringing groups of people together to work towards a common goal during team building activities
  • Giving patients more freedom to learn and grow that they would get at a traditional workshop or meeting
  • Increasing self-esteem, improving behavior, and positively affecting attitudes of all involved
  • Offering a unique and positive outlet for harmful negative feelings like anxiety, stress, and fear
  • Releasing healthy neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, which help the brain heal during the early recovery period
  • Ushering insights gained through adventure-based activities into our patients’ everyday lives
