At Chattanooga Recovery Center, we walk alongside you as you work to overcome your addiction to live a sober life.

Why is Equine Therapy Helpful?

Most people have had a cherished family pet while growing up that became a family member like any other sibling. This type of animal companionship is the basis of equine therapy. It acknowledges that spending time with animals can be therapeutic and that animals can hold a true sense of emotional intelligence, especially when considering cognitively intelligent animals like horses.

After spending therapy sessions with horses, many people feel heightened senses of:

  • Emotional awareness
  • Empathy
  • Self-confidence
  • Trust

Equine therapy is not just about petting horses, though. It involves routine care for the horses, too. By establishing these routines and learning how to care for an animal that is depending on them, people in equine therapy also commonly report better feelings of impulse control.

You can do the following with the horses during equine therapy sessions:

  • Feeding
  • Grooming
  • Riding
  • Relaxing

Overall, equine therapy might be the new type of therapy you need to reach sobriety. Even if you have never spent much time with horses before, it might be the right fit for you, so please don’t hesitate to contact us about it to learn more.

Supervision During Equine Therapy

There is no stable at Chattanooga Recovery Center, located on Kent Street in Chattanooga. For our equine therapy sessions, we are partnering with local stables with strong reputations for excellence in their fields and animal care. The stable masters we work with help pair our patients with horses who have been bred and trained to assist with equine therapy sessions.

At no point during an equine therapy session will you be left alone with your horse. Our top priority is safety for our patients and the horses at Chattanooga Recovery Center.
